Retrofit Baltimore - A New Civic Works Project

Retrofit Baltimore, a new project of Civic Works, will be meeting at Woodbrook Baptist in Fellowship Hall, August 9th from 7pm - 8 pm
Retrofit Baltimore is a project of the Civic Works, Baltimore’s non-profit service corp. Founded in 1993, Civic Works’ mission is to build a better Baltimore through community service, green job training and environmentally focused initiatives.
Civic Works launched Retrofit Baltimore after realizing that while home energy efficiency upgrades make sense for many Greater Baltimore area homeowners, a lack of trusted information was preventing most homeowners from taking advantage of this opportunity. Retrofit Baltimore seeks to fill this gap by providing homeowners with trusted science-based information about the benefits of an energy retrofit, which include improved comfort and lower energy bills.
At the same time, the widespread adoption of home energy upgrades in Baltimore holds the potential to generate positive change for our local and global communities. Rather than asking homeowners to navigate the energy retrofit process alone, Retrofit Baltimore brings people together so that as a community we can ensure that our investments create family sustaining jobs for under-served Baltimoreans. Moreover, by making their homes more efficient, community members are not only cutting their energy bills, but also lowering their carbon emissions and fighting climate change. Our work has been recognized by Mayor Rawlings-Blake's Weekly Newsletter.

RFCOP Crime Update Week of June 18th-24th

Message From Precinct 6 Captain Trentzsch:

With the approach of summer and the weather getting warmer, please take a few moments to look at our crime prevention tips. We are entering a season that historically has seen a rise in deception burglaries, home improvement scams and shed burglaries. There are useful ideas that could prevent you from becoming a victim and I encourage that you share this information with your friends and neighbors.
I would also encourage everyone to consider becoming involved with a Community Association or Citizens On Patrol Group. I understand that becoming involved with your community can be intimidating but there are some great groups in Towson that have been doing this for a long time and could use your help. Many of the members of these groups have met friends for life and enjoy being personally involved in what happens to their community. These groups also make our jobs much easier as they know what is going on in their neighborhoods and can be a key component in providing information to solve crime. If you would like to become more involved with your community, please consider joining one of our 20 Towson Citizens On Patrol groups or your local Community Association. I personally meet throughout the year with these groups and you can take this opportunity to talk with me and meet some of the supervisors and post car officers that work your area. For further information concerning these groups and when we meet please contact our Outreach Team.

Reward for Retrieval of Lost Airplane!

A neighbor was flying their remote control glider on the fields of Dumbarton and it was caught on top of the weeping cherry tree! It is blue, white and yellow and spans 5 feet and weighs only 8 oz. The owner would love to have it back so if anyone sees it fall from the tree in that area in the coming days, let me know here and I'll put you in touch. They are offering a $20 reward! They kindly ask to NOT risk injury by attempting to climb the tree!

RFCOP Crime Update Week of June 11th-17th

RF Crime report week of June 11-17, 2012

Note from the RFCOP:
We would like to express our condolences to Roxanne, John and Ian Rinehart, patrollers for the citizens on patrol, for their recent loss of their great aunt Alice Crane and to Marie Mencken who is a niece of Alice.  Alice has been a resident of the Forge residing on Brandon since August 1954 and possibly the longest permanent resident in the forge.
We are currently working on statistics for the past 1 ½ years of crime incidents in the forge since January of 2011.  We are very proud of everyone’s participation in helping make our community a safer place to live by reporting suspicious incidents and keeping an eye and ear out for neighbors.  Currently it appears we have not had a first degree burglary in Rodgers Forge since April, 2011 up to and including this present report. The statistics should be available by September.  Always keep vigilant with “Lights on, Lock up, Look out”.

International scammers are calling elderly people, posing as grandchildren and conning them out of thousands of dollars. This phone scam has been occurring throughout Maryland.
Carroll County Police Warn of Callers Scamming ‘Grandma’ International scammers are calling elderly people, posing as grandchildren and conning them out of thousands of...
Police say unsuspecting older adults in Carroll County have been receiving phone calls from individuals pretending to be their grandchildren, pleading for money to help them get out of jail.
Capt. Clarence Lust, assistant chief of criminal investigations at the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, said the latest incident occurred Monday and cost a resident of Third Avenue in Sykesville $1,900.
“Normally, they go, ‘Hey grandma or grandpa!’ to whoever answers the phone, who asks, ‘Who’s this?’” Lust said. “And then they say, ‘Well, you guess who it is.’ Whoever they say, it’s ‘Yeah, you’re right.’”
Once the person has taken the bait, the rest of the call is spent convincing the grandparent that their grandchild has been arrested and needs bail money, Lust said.
The scammers request that the money be wired through Western Union. Lust said in another case, a resident reportedly sent $1,500.
The callers, who police suspect are part of a criminal organization that uses a complex call forwarding system, have been traced to places like Mexico and Guatemala.
A total of four cases have resulted in individuals mistakenly sending checks for similar amounts, he said, but residents have received several more calls than that.
The sheriff's department is urging the community’s older residents to exercise caution when a caller identifies themselves as a grandchild.
Grandparents should verify the information by calling him or her back, Lust said.

It's Still Not Too Late To March in the 4th of July Parade!

If you still would like to walk in the Towson 4th of July parade this year, please let Janice Moore know.  She is looking for two people who would carry the Rodgers Forge banner at the front.  The community group will be joined by the Rodgers Forge PTA, Cub Pack 439 and staff from the Dumbarton Middle School(DMS).

Originally there was a restriction on the amount of people who could be accommodated but that has been lifted.  Since we will be located at the front of the parade, behind the grand marshall(s), you still would have time to see some of the parade once we are finished walking.

It is a 20 to 25 minute walk, as a group we would meet at DMS at approximately 8:30 am to organize the drive over because we will have passes for parking at the Burkshire.  Also, each walker will be given a flag & water bottle to carry.  We are looking into the possibility of having helium balloons available too for carrying as well.
Janice can be contacted either by email, jmrehoboth@gmail.com or phone 410-377-4074.
